FRILLA

Food Pavilion Concept // 2018

Food waste is an abundant problem worldwide. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, the world produces over 1.4 billion tons of food waste per year, roughly one-third of the global food supply. There is a necessity to tackle this problem, rethinking current infrastructure and daily habits. The annual financial loss in Catalunya due to waste is €112 per inhabitant, or €841 million for all of Catalonia. On average, Catalonians dispose of about 35kg of food per year. This is enough to feed someone for an entire month. As a small scale case study, Frilla is a pavilion within a Barcelona Superblock that encourages food donations of potential food waste, becoming a way for community members help hungry people in need. By utilizing zeer pots that allow for shortterm food storage, a predecessor of a fridge, it allows for a sustainable way to keep food fresh until pick up.
